The Global Positioning System is an integral part of the navigation by land or sea. But the technology has many other uses. It is for tracking where you’ve been, and how fast you move were too great. This makes it ideal for measuring athletic activities. Garmin is taking advantage of these possibilities for several years, and its devices become more sophisticated. Last in line is the Forerunner 405, a GPS-packs in a wrist-device is the same size as a G-Shock Clock.

The last we saw Forerunner, which was 301 more like a small band mobile phone on the arm. But the 405 does not reveal its true power in quite so obvious way. In fact, it looks like an ordinary sports timer, and comes in a choice of green or black.
The Forerunner 405 package includes more than just a GPS-enabled to Clock. There is a USB dongle called the ANT stick, which looks like a memory stick, but is in fact to transfer data wirelessly from the clock on your PC for analysis. A curious strap is also included, which is actually a wireless heart rate monitor (HRM), though you can also buy less with the ANT Clock for about 20.

Additional accessories are sold separately, including a Foot Pod and Bike Sensor GSC 10. The Foot Pod will cost about 60, and uses the movement of the feet at a distance and pace during practice charge inside, where no GPS signal is available. The GSC 10 tracks of your bike speed and cadence, measuring up their strokes per minute. All these devices connect wirelessly to the Forerunner 405.
So the Garmin offers a wide variety of training support is available. Unlike most navigation devices, but you need the manual in great detail before they started the 405 study. The paper guide provides only the basics, how, how to navigate the Clock interface, how the device with the included adapter free of charge, and how to couple with external peripherals. This is not enough to collect exercise data.

To get a handle on this, you need the full manual on the CD. Strangely, the training tool software are not included. In fact, there are two alternatives here – a standalone desktop application and/or a pure web-based interface, although both have the drivers installed for the USB ANT stick to work. These must be downloaded from Garmin’s web site, too. This makes sense for the web-based version, Garmin Connect, how it works online anyway. But it would be practical to have Garmin Training Center and the USB drivers on the CD have handy in case you do not have an Internet connection.
Once you get everything running, the Forerunner 405 are complex set of functions together with aplomb. The edge of the clock face is touch sensitive and works together with the keys to configure the menus and options. Most of the time working in the training mode, and here the 405 works like a (very) glorified stopwatch. Just press the buttons, then hold the section of the rim marked training. After the repair has received a Garmin satellite, you can begin to run on your computer. Just press start to start/stop button, the data collection, press again to end the session or press the lap/reset button to start another round when doing circuits.

If you are with the HRM, they will automatically be detected if within a 10m range, and a data connection without any additional settings are enabled. The heart rate will then be collected in addition to GPS location data. You can scroll through different views during training mode with a stroke of the rim, showing distance, time, pace and heart rate, or a fully customizable combination. A trip to the menu modes, for running and cycling, the heart rate and speed zones accordingly and changes the calculation of energy expenditure Schneider. There is a virtual buddy system, even when the tempo for an imaginary friend. The 405 will let you know, how far in front or behind you.
But training is not the only means. You can the 405 simple as a GPS locator, walking or running cross country use. For this mode, you can either save a village, when it physically, or enter the coordinates manually, although the latter is a little tricky with the limited buttons and controls. A compass display, as then points you to stay in the right direction as you. The Forerunner 405 also set a time/date mode where it works like a clock with two zones and an alarm. This is also where you planned to see a progress bar for your training, and training for the day.

When it comes time to analyze your training is to be the Forerunner with the ANT USB stick, which, as we have already mentioned, requires software downloaded from Garmin’s web site linked. Then you can see one of the two options (or both), how your training is coming along. Garmin Connect and Training Center offers much the same information. However, there are subtle differences.
Both have ads for speed, altitude, heart rate (if you’re using the HRM) and cadence (if you are with the GSC 10). But Garmin Connect these offers either separately or together two at a time when training center to showcase up to three images that practical for the examination as it relates to your heart rate and pace up hill.

Garmin Connect in hooks directly to Google Maps, the route shown on a map overlaid not, the Training Center. You can also see the player mode exactly how the data relates to your physical location at the time. For a map view of your route in Training Center, you can export to Google Earth. But this does not cut into tiny detail from Garmin Connect player mode. Where Garmin Connect stores your data online, Training Center stores them locally, so you want to use both at the same time for a complete picture.
Conclusion
After the first phase of learning, Garmin Forerunner 405 offers a wealth of facilities to monitor and guide your fitness training on foot or by bicycle. The Qstarz BT-Q2000 offers similar speed and route tracking capabilities for much less. But it does not have the extra peripheral options, the stand-alone GPS navigation capabilities, yet virtual partner, making it a much more limited device. And although the Forerunner is quite expensive, it is a uniquely powerful device, and can you give that all important edge in training.
