Alpine IXA-W404 Review

Alpine reasons waived if the CD mechanism and to have concentrated on features that iPod users would look forward, it would be a hit. It was only partly true, but is gaining momentum.

My overall impression of the IXAW404 was very favorable. The unit is dominated by a 4.3-inch color monitor and QGVA large rotary knob. The screen is used to inform the driver of the functions performed by the deck. When in iPod mode, will show artist, song and track information and cover (if your iPod is loaded). The resolution is very good, and the smallest detail on the cover is well represented. It is not necessary, but it’s a nice gesture that the user connect to the iPod experience. The screen has an input for an optional navigation system and a dedicated backup camera input. This is typical Alpine IXAW404 fit and finish. Everything looks well made and it “feels right” when you turn knobs or push buttons. The large middle button is made of plastic, but it looks good. I would have preferred something in aluminum for a large button that off, but it’s OK.

Alpine was the first manufacturer to directly to Apple instead of “reverse engineering” its iPod interface. The result of an Apple-certified “for iPod” and “Works with iPhone is Made” rating. All iPod and iPhone functions are supported, including to search and playback video file, and you do not get the annoying “Airplane Mode?” Warning with iPhones. The connection to the device is supplied by an iPod iPhone Dock to USB, and it’s Superfast.

The rest of the unit’s AM FM and … well, that’s it. AM FM iPod is all you really need, but it is completely upgraded with optional HD Radio tuner, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, navigation, and even a DVD CD-changer for the die-hards who still need some plastic in their play. An interesting feature on the HD tuner in this year’s iTunes tagging. If you just hear HD and hear a song that you love, a touch on the main knob tags, the songs and store them on your iPod. The next time you hook up with iTunes, you are asked whether you want to download the song from the iTunes Store.

I liked this unit. If you have an iPod user, and I can not remember the last time a new CD playing in your car, do not think twice. Good fit and finish, easy to use, great songs and a search function to easily see the screen make this piece a winner.
